Maybe you may remember, back in the day, when Mountain Dew's slogan was "Get Vertical". I remember this not because I drank Mountain Dew, but because I sold concessions at the county fair that year, and we sold lots of Mountain Dew cups with "Get Vertical" on them!
What does this have to do with first grade, you may ask? Well, today was the day that I introduced vertical addition to the kids. In order to make it much more exciting, as well as easier to understand, I explain the idea that if you drink more pop, you might be more vertical...energetic, jumping up and down, etc. So, we practiced "getting vertical" and standing up tall.
This is what I like to call "Mountain Dew Math." For example,
3+4=7 Is NOT vertical math
3
+ 4
-------
7 IS vertical math!
So, have some fun with this this weekend! Practice some "Mountain Dew Math" with your student! (And MAYBE??? enjoy some Mountain Dew???)
Blessings to you!!
